On the 8th May 2025, the Parish Council will be celebrating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day by holding a fish and chip lunch in the Village Hall.
This event will be free for those residents who are 80 or over by 8th May 2025. If only one in a couple is 80 then both will get free fish and chips. Any spare places will be offered to residents of the village, for those younger than 80 there will be a nominal charge.
Cllr Beryl Harrison is currently taking names for those who would like to partake of the event, whether over 80 or not, for planning purposes. Your names need to be on the list to be included in the fish and chip lunch, tickets will be provided. Please contact by phone or email 01843 594094/[email protected]. There will also be entertainment.
If you have neighbours who are in the older age group and who may want to take part in this event, but with no access to the internet, please could you let them know. Please leave a message on answerphone if no-one available.
Later on that day, the beacon will be lit on Hugin’s Green, at 9.30pm, with wartime music being played, and the proclamation relating to the occasion being read as has been done in the past. We look forward to seeing you there.
Street Parties -
Kent County Council waives fees for VE Day and VJ Day street parties.
Residents who want to arrange a street party to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day will not have to pay a road closure application fee.
As with other historic celebrations, Kent County Council (KCC) has set up an online form for residents to express their interest. The deadline for VE day celebration road closures was Saturday 22 March, and will be Friday 27 June for VJ day street parties.
Once an application is received, KCC officers will ensure the route is safe and the event will comply with the terms and conditions before confirming it can go ahead. To be eligible for the fee waiver, the road closure must be planned for the sole purpose of holding a celebration street party in a residential area. Parties will be approved for residential roads where only resident traffic would be impacted.
KCC will not be able to approve parties on main roads, bus routes, or any road that needs to be used to access shops or businesses.
Before applying for a closure, applicants must speak to residents in the area to make sure they have no objections, ensure signs are clearly visible for all road users, and make sure all rubbish is cleared before the road is reopened. Successful sites will be provided with road closure signs.
Neil Baker, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “These occasions are a time of reflection and celebration, marking a momentous time in our nation’s history. It is only right that we support people in any way we can who wish to celebrate.
‘I would encourage anyone interested in hosting a street party to apply via our online form.”
Chairman of Kent County Council Bryan Sweetland said: “Communities across Kent have many shared memories of wonderful street parties staged at moments in our history, and we want to help with the process of creating more this year.
"VE Day and VJ Day are hugely significant occasions for the nation, particularly on the 80th anniversary. I hope as many neighbourhoods as possible come together.”
